June Is Bustin’ Out All Over, from Carousel©, one of the greatest Broadway shows, is the second musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Their 1945 masterpiece, adapted from Ferenc Molnár’s 1909 play Liliom, transplants its Budapest setting to the Maine coastline.
The story revolves around carousel barker Billy Bigelow whose romance with millworker Julie Jordan goes tragically wrong when he participates in a robbery to provide for Julie and their unborn child. The show includes the exquisite songs If I Loved You and You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Carousel required considerable modification during out-of-town tryouts, but when it opened on Broadway on April 19, 1945, it was an immediate hit with critics and audiences. Carousel ran for 890 performances and duplicated its success in the West End in 1950 and in many revivals worldwide. In 1999, Time magazine named Carousel the best musical of the 20th century.
And now, welcome the month of June with a rousing anthem from Carousel, one of the greatest of Broadway shows!
Sing Along, Everyone!
June is bustin’ out all over
All over the meadow and the hill
Buds’re bustin’ out a bushes
And the rompin’ river pushes
Ev’ry little wheel that wheels beside the mill
June is bustin’ out all over
The feelin’ is gettin’ so intense
That the young Virginia creepers
Have been huggin’ the bejeepers
Outta all the mornin’ glories on the fence!
Because it’s June!
June, June, June
Just because it’s June, June, June!
Fresh and alive and gay and young
June is a love song, sweetly sung
June is bustin’ out all over!
The saplin’s are bustin’ out with sap!
Love has found my brother, Junior
And my sister’s even loonier!
And my Ma is gettin’ kittenish with Pap!
June is bustin’ out all over
To ladies the men are payin’ court
Lotsa ships are kept at anchor
Just because the captains hanker
For the comfort they can only get in port!
Because it’s June!
June, June, June
Just because it’s June, June, June!
June makes the bay look bright and new
Sails gleaming white on sunlit blue
June is bustin’ out all over
The ocean is full of Jacks and Jills
With her little tail a-swishin’
Ev’ry lady fish is wishin’
That a male would come and grab ‘er by the gills!
June is bustin’ out all over!
The sheep aren’t sheepish anymore!
All the rams that chase the ewe sheep
Are determined there’ll be new sheep
And the ewe-sheep aren’t even keepin’ score!
On account-a it’s June!
June, June, June
Just because it’s June, June, June!

And, as a special treat, enjoy the Family Guy’s homage to one of the great and truly classic Broadway shows.
Amy,
After looking out at a heavy rain here in south Florida, it’s so refreshing to view such a cheerful and happy song from an extraordinary, brilliant show.
Keep the sunshine coming.
Norm
Norm, I’m so happy this song brightened your day. Thanks for reading & commenting!
Amy, thanks for the background…you can try out for TCM as a fill-in for Ben M! Such interesting facts and great background.
I’d be perfect for that job! Thanks, Rani!
Love the song as well as the musical.
The musical is a masterpiece, in my opinion. I’m delighted you enjoyed the song!
Wow, very fun. What a great song, especially the Family Guy version! Thanks for making this a perfect June day. Wouldn’t it be fun to recreate the dances? I could fit into one of my mom’s circle skirts (ha!) and dance around from my front yard to the back yard. Unfortunately no sailors to lift me up to the roof.
So happy that you enjoyed the song! I’m intrigued by the picture you paint of your dancing antics!
Great story. Thanks.
Thank for reading, Dave!
