Soft rock is a subgenre of rock ‘n roll that’s gotten a bad rap lately. Perhaps it’s because many of the` songs are, quite frankly, silly, goopy, and downright sappy. But the music can also be heartbreakingly beautiful and the lyrics timeless and universal. For me, the best example is the 1977 Dan Hill ballad Sometimes When We Touch.
A Canadian pop singer and songwriter, Dan Hill had two major international hits with Sometimes When We Touch and Can’t We Try, a duet with Vonda Shepard, as well as a number of other charting singles in Canada and the US. He also established himself as a songwriter who produced hits for artists such as George Benson and Celine Dion. Sometimes When We Touch was Hill’s biggest hit, peaking at No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Canadian RPM Singles chart.
Tina Turner covered Dan Hill’s remarkable song in 1978 on her album Rough. For those of you who are Tina Turner fans (and who isn’t?), this is her cover of Sometimes When We Touch.
A Taste of the Lyrics
You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I’d rather hurt you, honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I’m only just beginning
To see the real you
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty’s too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you ’til I die
‘Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you
‘Til the fear in me subsides

These were a very nice soundtrack for my evening, thank you!
I hope it was a romantic evening!
I have always loved this song. I think Dan Hill’s version is the most beautiful.
Thanks, Wendy! It’s about 50/50 in who prefers which version. But I agree with you!
