Mahna Mahna©, composed by Piero Umiliani, was originally heard in the Italian film, Sweden: Heaven and Hell. The Muppets introduced it to America on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1969, where it was sung by a purple puppet with wild orange hair and a furry, green tunic, backed up by the Snowths, pink cow-like aliens with horns, cone-shaped mouths, and yellow lips that are always open.
After hearing this classic Muppets sing-a-long for the first time, I walked around the house singing “mahna mahna” over and over like a deranged seagull. Fluffypuss and Peekaboo started following me, licking their lips and thinking, “Can the Friskies! Tonight it’s seagull with a side of feathers.”
